What is Reiki?
The name Reiki derives from the Japanese pronunciation of two Japanese characters that describe the energy itself: 'rei' (meaning 'unseen' or 'spiritual') and ‘ki’.  In English, the meaning of Reiki is often given as 'universal life energy' Japanese speakers use the term as a generic 'spiritual power' while the Usui Method of Reiki Healing is specifically Usui reiki shiki ryoho.

Theory
Reiki teachings state that there is a universal 'life force' energy, which can be accessed by practitioners to induce a healing effect. The belief is that the energy will flow through the practitioner's hands whenever the hands are placed on, or held near a potential recipient. Some teachings stress the importance of the practitioner's intention or presence in this process, while others claim that the energy is drawn by the recipient's injury to activate or enhance the natural healing processes. A second level of training, including another initiation, is said to equip the practitioner to perform Reiki treatments from a distance. This method, it is stated, involves the use of special symbols to form a temporary connection between the practitioner and the recipient, regardless of location, and then to send the Reiki energy. The energy involved in a Reiki treatment is said to be 'from the Universe,' rather than the personal energy of the practitioner, and is therefore inexhaustible. Reiki is described by adherents as a holistic therapy which brings about healing on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. It is said that healing may occur in any or all of these domains in a single treatment, without any conscious direction needed by either the practitioner or the recipient.

Training
The teaching of Reiki outside of Japan is commonly divided into three levels, or degrees.

First degree: REIKI I
The first degree Reiki course teaches the basic theories and procedures of how to work with Reiki energy. The channel through which Reiki energy passes to the practitioner is said to be opened or widened through four "attunements" given to the student by the teacher. Students learn hand placement positions on the recipient's body that are thought to be most conducive to the healing process in a whole body treatment. Having completed the first degree course, the participant can treat himself and others with Reiki. The course duration is typically two days, although this varies widely.

Second degree: REIKI II
In the second degree Reiki course, the student learns the use of three symbols which are said to enhance the healing effect and allow for distance healing. Another attunement is given which is said to further increase the capacity for Reiki to flow through the student, as well as empowering the use of the symbols. Having completed the second level, the student can treat people with Reiki without being physically present with the recipient.

Master Level: REIKI III
Through the third degree, or "master training", the student becomes a Reiki Master. One or more attunements are carried out and the student learns a further master-level symbol. Having completed the master training, the new Reiki Master can attune other people to Reiki and teach the three degrees of Reiki. The first and second degrees are prerequisites for the master training. The duration of the master training can be anything from a day to a year or more, depending on the school and philosophy of the Reiki Master giving the training. In the case of comprehensive training, the third level is often broken into two or three smaller stages of attunements and teaching.

Karuna
Karuna is offered as a healing art and spiritual practice. Meditation and practice of any energy system or art has the effect of increasing your capacity to handle energy as well as your own personal vibration. That includes consistent practice with Usui Reiki or personal meditation. Karuna has new meditations, new uses for the symbols, and new attunements. It is a loving, heart centered compassionate healing art that works best with the focus on the loving compassion of all creation flowing through you. You can use the Karuna Ki symbols just like using the Usui Reiki symbols, weaving them with Usui or any other Reiki form.

Vibro-Acoustic
A good part of the stress we all experience in the twentieth century is due to the advancements of our own technology. This same technology, combined with our traditional techniques for healing and achieving balance, may help neutralize the stress we created. Far-reaching possibilities are inherent in using this type of vibrational technology in the areas of massage, energy work, physical healing, emotional release work, hypnosis, stress reduction, relaxation and meditation. Through the use of sound, music and tones delivered through the Vibro-Acoustic System, brainwaves are stimulated to match frequencies of deep states of relaxation and meditation.

Qigong
The Five Element Medical Qigong Set is a series of movements that stimulate the major Chinese energy meridian systems in the human body. Qigong work opens the chi meridians to build and circulate Qi to all areas of the body. Qigong is a healthy lifestyle practice. Benefits include stress reduction, improved circulation, a sense of balance, weight control and an overall increase in energy for everyday life. The Five Element set was developed by Sifu Xu Hung Tao in Beijing China in the Medicine-less Hospital.

Tai Chi
Tai Chi is a Chinese marital and healing art designed to develop “chi” or energy within the body. It is characterized by slow, gentle movements. Its can be used to rejuvenate, heal, and prevent illness and is especially good for cardiovascular health and stress reduction. Each week will provide repetition of what has learned previously as well as an introduction and practice of new movements. Tai Chi can be practiced as a moving medication.

Just for today
I will give thanks for my many blessings.

Just for today

Just for today
I will be kind to every living thing.

Heart Circle
The Heart Circle Workshop is offered on a monthly basis for small groups interested in enhancing communication.

Calling The Circle, Taking it to Counsel

When we sit in a circle together and share our thoughts and feelings, we participate in a powerful, unifying practice whose origins stem from the very beginning of human time. All early cultures practiced some form of this ritual, which gives each individual in the group a voice, and at the same time reveals the one voice, and the ultimate unity, of the group. This profound and simple way of talking and listening has experienced a modern rebirth in counseling, social work, and spirituality. Most circles benefit from the presence of a leader who opens the circle. The leader may announce a theme for the circle, or one may simply evolve from the unstructured expressions of each participant. The circle continues for as long as feels right, at which point the leader may summarize what has been said, perhaps leading everyone in a moment of silence before the circle disbands. One of the most powerful components of this work is the talking stick, which can be any object-a crystal, a flower, or a candle-that is passed around the circle from person to person. The person holding the object speaks until he has fully expressed his feelings, and no one else interjects, interrupts, or even responds until they are holding the stick. This enables people who have a hard time speaking out to express long buried feelings and points of view. This is powerful because in a community it is often what is not said or acknowledged that causes the most pain and suffering. The circle, which contains no hard edges or angles, is the ideal container for these difficult truths. As we hear the many perspectives the subject at hand inspires, we begin to see that our individual truth is just one of many. Our own hard edges begin to soften as the circle flows from one person to the next, and each wave of words cleanses us of one more layer of mental and emotional armor, freeing us to be closer to the people around us.

SPEAKING FROM THE HEART
Imagine the words emerging from the mid-chest region rather than the mouth

 LISTENING FROM THE HEART
Attentive listening is rarer than speaking

The intention is set and with it the quality of communication skills come alive...
